Conflicts are problems or obstacles that characters face throughout a work of literature. A piece of writing, such as a short story, may have only one conflict or multiple conflicts.
The conflicts that we will focus on this year are man vs. man, man vs. himself, man vs. nature, man vs. society, man vs. supernatural, and man vs. technology.
Man vs. Man = when one person opposes another (this may also be seen as good vs. evil); an example of this might be Spiderman and the Green Goblin
Man vs. Himself = when a person struggles with a problem or decision internally (inside); an example of this may be seen in the Hulk (he doesn't want to hurt people, but his strength can be helpful and harmful
Man vs. Nature = when a person or a group of people are battling the elements; an example of this may be seen in the film The Perfect Storm
Man vs. Society = when a small group or an individual faces off against or stands against a larger group; an example of this might be seen in The Hunger Games
Man vs. Supernatural = when a person or group of people faces off against something magical, alien, ghostly, or miraculous; excellent examples of these are the Harry Potter series, Thor, and Casper the Friendly Ghost
Man vs. Technology = when a person or group of people face a dilemma (problem) or are impeded (held back) by technology; it should be noted that technology may be something intricate like the robotic suit in Iron Man or something simple like a gun firing
